Outdoor LED Drivers for Professional Lighting Projects

FAHOLD outdoor LED drivers are constant-current power solutions developed for professional street lighting, tunnel lighting, area lighting, stadium lighting, shoebox fixtures, wall lights and other commercial outdoor luminaires. The current portfolio covers approximately 26W to 400W and includes several input-voltage, LED-output and lighting-control platforms.

Outdoor driver selection involves more than rated wattage. The LED module's voltage range and operating current, facility AC input, dimming protocol, enclosure protection, surge environment, thermal design and certification requirements must all be matched to the finished luminaire.

FAHOLD organizes the outdoor portfolio by control method and electrical platform so fixture manufacturers can first choose between programmable / analog control, DALI-2 digital control and simpler outdoor-driver architectures before comparing individual models.

Outdoor LED Driver Power Range: 26W to 400W

The current FAHOLD outdoor portfolio covers compact auxiliary and low-power outdoor fixtures through high-power commercial lighting systems.

Power DirectionPlatform DirectionTypical Fixture
26W–60WT1 and lower-power F1 / R2 / R3 optionsCompact street lights, tunnel lights, display lighting, wall fixtures and auxiliary outdoor lighting
75W–150WF1 / F1E / F2D / R2 / R3Street lights, area lights, wall packs, tunnel fixtures and commercial outdoor luminaires
200W–240WF1 / F1E / F2D / R2 / R3High-output street lighting, roadway fixtures, tunnel and area lighting
320W–400WF1 / F1E / R2 / R3 depending on power classHigh-power roadway, stadium and professional outdoor LED fixtures

Rated power is only the first selection parameter. A 200W driver is not automatically suitable for every 200W LED fixture because the LED voltage and required current must also fall within the driver's supported operating range.

Constant-Current Outdoor LED Drivers

The FAHOLD outdoor portfolio is primarily designed around constant-current LED power architectures. Constant-current regulation controls LED operating current while the output voltage varies within the supported electrical window of the selected model.

This is particularly important in street lights, tunnel lights and other professional luminaires where LED module forward voltage changes according to LED quantity, board architecture, current, temperature and production tolerance.

For correct driver matching, provide the minimum, nominal and maximum LED forward voltage together with the required operating current and maximum fixture wattage.

100–277V Outdoor LED Drivers

100–277Vac is one of the main input platforms in the FAHOLD outdoor range. F1, T1 and F2D products use this input direction for professional street, tunnel, area and other outdoor lighting systems.

This broad commercial input range allows compatible luminaires to be used across common nominal 120V, 208V, 240V and 277V electrical systems, subject to the exact model and project requirements.

The AC input voltage should always be evaluated separately from the LED output voltage. A luminaire may operate from 277Vac facility power while the driver supplies a much lower regulated DC voltage to the LED module.

200–277V Outdoor LED Drivers

FAHOLD F1E is a dedicated 200–277Vac outdoor driver platform for projects that do not require nominal 120Vac input. The current F1E portfolio covers approximately 50W to 320W and provides several LED output-voltage windows for different street, tunnel and high-power outdoor fixture designs.

A dedicated 200–277Vac platform can be useful for commercial and European-market outdoor projects standardized around higher AC supply voltages.

0–10V vs DALI-2 Outdoor LED Drivers

0–10V and DALI-2 can both provide dimming, but they serve different lighting-control architectures.

ControlTypical DirectionSelection Consideration
0–10VAnalog dimming for individual fixtures or conventional lighting-control systemsSimple control wiring, controller compatibility and required dimming behavior
DALI-2Digital addressable lighting-control systemsDALI network architecture, controller compatibility and project communication requirements

Choose the protocol from the actual project-control architecture rather than only from the required dimming percentage. Fixture manufacturers should confirm wiring, control-system compatibility and the exact driver configuration before production.

Programmable Outdoor LED Drivers

Offline programming allows supported driver parameters such as output current to be configured within the approved operating limits of the product.

This can help OEM outdoor-lighting manufacturers reduce the number of unique power platforms across a fixture family. Multiple street-light or area-light SKUs may use a common driver platform with different programmed current settings when voltage, power and thermal limits allow it.

Programming requirements should be defined before production so driver settings, fixture wattage and product labels remain consistent.

PWM, Resistor and Timer Control Options

In addition to standard 0–10V control, compatible outdoor-driver configurations support PWM, resistor-based adjustment and timer dimming.

Timer control can be useful in roadway or area-lighting applications where fixtures follow scheduled nighttime output levels, while PWM and resistor interfaces can support different fixture-control or OEM integration requirements.

Available control methods depend on the specific series and configuration and should be confirmed during model selection.

Outdoor LED Drivers for Street Lighting

Street-light drivers must be matched to the electrical and environmental requirements of the complete roadway luminaire. Important parameters include LED forward voltage, output current, fixture power, control protocol, surge environment, enclosure design and target-market certification.

FAHOLD outdoor platforms provide multiple power and control options for street-light manufacturers, including 0–10V, programmable and DALI-2 product directions.

LED Drivers for Tunnel Lighting

Tunnel lighting often combines long operating hours, controlled dimming and demanding installation environments. Driver efficiency, output stability, control compatibility and enclosure protection should therefore be considered together.

F1, F1E, T1 and F2D platforms provide different power and control directions for compatible tunnel-lighting projects, ranging from compact low-power fixtures to high-output programmable luminaires.

Outdoor LED Drivers for Stadium and Area Lighting

Stadium and large-area luminaires often require higher driver power together with programmable output and professional control interfaces. The upper F1 and F1E power classes provide outdoor-driver options for compatible high-output LED fixtures.

For these projects, fixture designers should evaluate maximum output current, LED voltage, surge environment, thermal conditions and control requirements rather than selecting only from rated wattage.

Drivers for Shoebox Lights and Wall Lighting

Shoebox and wall-mounted outdoor luminaires can use different driver architectures depending on fixture size, LED-string voltage and required control functions.

R2 and R3 provide high-voltage LED-string platforms for compact outdoor fixtures, while programmable F1-family products provide broader LED output-voltage and control options.

R2 Non-Isolated Outdoor LED Drivers

R2 is a compact non-isolated outdoor and industrial driver platform using 120–277Vac input and a 180–260Vdc high-voltage LED output architecture. Current models cover 40W through 320W.

The platform is relevant to shoebox lights, wall fixtures and compatible linear lighting systems where compact size and high LED-string voltage are priorities.

R2 uses an IP42 enclosure platform on current products, so final installation protection depends on the luminaire enclosure and overall fixture construction.

IP65, IP66 and IP67 Outdoor LED Driver Protection

Ingress protection requirements depend on where and how the driver is installed. FAHOLD outdoor platforms use different enclosure ratings according to series and configuration.

PlatformProtection DirectionTypical Use
F1 / F1E / T1IP65 / IP67 depending on configurationProfessional street, tunnel, stadium and general outdoor luminaires
F2DIP66 / IP67DALI-2 controlled outdoor lighting
R2IP42Drivers installed within a suitably protected luminaire enclosure
R3IP65 / IP67Waterproof shoebox, wall and street-lighting applications

The driver IP rating applies to the driver enclosure itself. Connectors, cable entries, seals, fixture housing, mounting orientation and installation conditions must also provide the required environmental protection.

Waterproof LED Drivers for Outdoor Luminaires

A waterproof LED driver can simplify fixture integration in outdoor applications where the power supply may be exposed to humidity, condensation or environmental contaminants.

However, the required IP rating should be determined from the final installation. A driver mounted inside a sealed street-light housing may have different enclosure requirements from a driver mounted externally or in a more exposed fixture design.

Surge Protection for Outdoor LED Lighting

Outdoor lighting systems can be exposed to electrical transients caused by switching events, long cable runs and lightning-related disturbances. Surge capability is therefore an important part of street, tunnel and area-light driver selection.

For example, current F1 and T1 products specify differential-mode protection up to 6kV and common-mode protection up to 10kV. Surge ratings vary by platform, so the exact driver specification should be checked against the project's electrical environment.

Driver-level surge protection should be coordinated with facility grounding and system-level surge protection rather than treated as the only protective measure.

Outdoor LED Driver Protection Functions

Depending on series, FAHOLD outdoor LED drivers include electrical protection such as short-circuit protection, over-voltage protection and over-temperature protection.

Protection functions help the driver respond to abnormal electrical or thermal conditions but do not replace correct LED-board design, luminaire cooling, wiring, grounding or branch-circuit protection.

How to Select the Right Outdoor LED Driver

  1. Confirm the AC input voltage.
Identify the actual supply voltage and select a compatible 100–277Vac, 120–277Vac, 200–277Vac or other supported input platform.
  2. Define the LED voltage window.
Provide the minimum, nominal and maximum forward voltage of the LED module.
  3. Determine the required output current.
The LED operating current must remain inside the selected driver's supported current range.
  4. Calculate the maximum fixture power.
Use the actual electrical LED load rather than the marketed luminaire wattage alone.
  5. Select the control method.
Define whether the project requires 0–10V, PWM, resistor, timer, DALI-2 or fixed-output operation.
  6. Determine whether programming is required.
Programmable output can simplify OEM fixture families using multiple wattage or current targets.
  7. Define the environmental requirement.
Select the appropriate IP rating according to whether the driver is enclosed inside the luminaire or directly exposed to the outdoor environment.
  8. Review surge requirements.
Match driver surge capability with the roadway, tunnel or outdoor electrical environment and any system-level protection strategy.
  9. Check thermal conditions.
Review ambient temperature, luminaire heat dissipation, mounting position and available airflow.
  10. Confirm certification requirements.
Verify the applicable driver and finished-luminaire safety, EMC and market requirements before production approval.

The table provides a starting point only. Final selection should always be based on the LED load, AC input, control system, IP requirement, surge environment and target certification of the actual luminaire.

Replacement Outdoor LED Driver Selection

When replacing an existing outdoor LED driver, do not select the replacement from wattage alone. Match the original input-voltage range, LED output-voltage window, operating current, maximum power, dimming protocol and enclosure requirements.

A replacement driver with the same wattage but a different current or output-voltage range can operate the LED module incorrectly or fail to reach the required fixture output.

Outdoor LED Driver Manufacturer for OEM Lighting Projects

Outdoor luminaire manufacturers often need more than a standard off-the-shelf wattage. LED voltage, current, programmed power, dimming protocol, cable configuration, enclosure protection, surge capability, mechanical dimensions and certification requirements can all affect the final driver specification.

FAHOLD supports outdoor-lighting manufacturers with model matching, programmable-output evaluation, datasheets, samples and OEM/ODM project development. Providing the AC input, LED voltage range, required current, maximum wattage, control method, IP requirement, surge requirement, certification target and expected quantity allows the product range to be narrowed more efficiently.
