ENGINEERING CHALLENGES

Common Power Challenges in Sign Lighting

Power architecture directly affects brightness consistency, reliability, installation and maintenance cost.

Uneven Brightness

Poor power distribution can create visible illumination differences across a sign.

Voltage Drop

Long cable runs and undersized conductors reduce voltage at distant LED modules.

Limited Installation Space

Narrow channel letters and cabinets require a compact, thermally stable driver.

Outdoor Exposure

Rain, condensation, humidity and dust require a suitable enclosure and IP rating.

Difficult Maintenance

Poorly divided circuits make fault isolation and future service more expensive.

SELECTION PROCESS

How to Select an LED Driver for Your Sign

Use a repeatable engineering sequence before choosing a product series or model.

  1. 1

    Confirm Output Voltage

Verify whether the LED modules operate at 12V or 24V DC.

  2. 2

    Calculate Total LED Load

Multiply module quantity by rated watts per module.

  3. 3

    Check the Environment

Identify indoor, damp or outdoor installation conditions.

  4. 4

    Divide Output Channels

Balance large signs across suitable output circuits.

  5. 5

    Confirm Dimming

Match the driver to the required control protocol.

TECHNICAL FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Core questions buyers and engineers should confirm before selecting a sign-lighting driver.

What type of LED driver is used for sign lighting?

Most LED modules and LED strips used in illuminated signs require a constant-voltage driver. The output voltage must match the LED load, commonly 12V or 24V DC.

Should I choose a 12V or 24V LED sign power supply?

Use the voltage specified by the LED module manufacturer. A 24V system normally carries half the current of a 12V system at the same wattage, which can reduce cable voltage drop, but the LED load and driver voltage must match.

How do I calculate the required driver power?

Multiply the number of LED modules by the rated watts per module to obtain total LED load. Divide that load by the chosen maximum driver utilization. For example, 120W of LED load at 80% utilization requires a driver rated for at least 150W.

Why are multiple output channels useful?

Multiple channels divide a large sign into separate output circuits. This can simplify wiring, balance current distribution and make troubleshooting easier when the channel loads are designed correctly.

Does an outdoor LED sign require an IP67 driver?

The required protection depends on the actual installation location and enclosure. Outdoor or wet-location projects commonly require an appropriately IP-rated driver, while the final rating should follow the project specification and local requirements.

Can sign-lighting LED drivers be dimmed?

Yes, when the driver and control system use compatible dimming methods. Confirm whether the project requires 0–10V, PWM, TRIAC or another protocol before selecting the driver.

How can I reduce voltage drop in a large sign?

Use a larger conductor, shorten the cable run, increase the number of balanced output channels, move the driver closer to the LED load or evaluate a suitable 24V LED system.

Can Fahold customize cables, connectors and output channels?

Project-specific configurations can be evaluated based on output voltage, rated power, channel quantity, dimming, cable, connector, housing, labeling, packaging and certification requirements.
